I want to write a story and I have my ideas for the plot but I don't know what to name my characters. The girl is a smart and quiet type but not like too smart she's annoying. Her family is mean to her and she gets mad at them a lot but she's pretty nice at school and she has a few friends. The boy is a new student and there's a lot of rumors that he was kicked out of his old school for drugs and fighting. He has a bad attitude so everyone believes it. What would be good names for them?

The character's names and personalities really don't have to fit. When the parents named their kids, they had no idea what they would be like in high school. Name's should be more reflective of the culture and the parent's personalities than anything else. I know that people have notions in their head of what a Rachel or Britney is like, but you don't have to follow those ideas. One thing you can do is figure out what year your character was born and find a list of popular names for that year. I know behindthename.com has some lists and for multiple countries, although only the US ones go back really far.
Pick out some names you like and really try to imagine your characters with those names. Or you could even slap some filler names in and write the story with the intention to change the names later. I've done that and decided I liked the filler names and never changed them.
